    Description :

The Pensions Institute is undoubtedly formally powerful. William Curtis has summarised the way in which it combines a number of Aalto's typical motifs: "the processional route over stepped levels; the toplit atrium; the precinct; and the formal urban facade". It also illustrates subtle ways in which Aalto developed the language of modernism. The frontal entrance facade, for example, both floats over a recessed ground floor and is thus disengaged from its base and, by the use of the granite plinth and its association with the immediate topography, reinforces the connection to the ground in an apparently pre-modern way. Though several Aalto trademarks are missing—there are no free-flowing curves or fan shapes; everything except a single wall on the roof obeys a plain orthogonal geometry-this is a quintessential Aalto building.
