...Yesterday, on All Souls’ Day, I had better luck. The Pope celebrates this commemoration in his home chapel in the Quirinale Palace. Everyone has free access there. I rushed with Tischbein to Monte Cavallo. The piazza opening in front of the palace is something very peculiar and unique, irregular, but at the same time great and charming…We rushed with the crowd across this amazing and a spacious courtyard, and up the staircase which is almost too vast. In these entrance halls, opposite the chapel, where the lines of rooms open, you can feel in a magnificent way how you are under the same roof with the deputy of Christ…All Souls’ Day is also a celebration day of all the artists in Rome. Like the chapel, the whole palace and all the rooms are as well open to everyone, and today the access is free for many hours, you don’t have to tip and the porter of the castle won’t bother you. – Goethe
