After a serious fire in 1561, the reconstruction project was the work of the royal architect Francisco de Salamanca. He gave birth to the modern town square in urban planning—a milestone for Spain and the Americas and a great contribution of the Spanish Baroque architecture.
The Plaza Mayor of Valladolid is the first great plaza in Spain, and closed with arcades, it is a space intended for use as a market and as a backdrop to the public celebrations.
