    Description :

Rovaniemi City Library, Hallituskatu 9, designed immediately after the Seinäjoki Library, develops some of the earlier building's themes on a both broader and more detailed scale. The planning was done between 1961 and 1966; construction took place from 1965 to 1968. In addition to a considerably larger collection of books for a larger readership, the building had to accommodate several special departments. The fan-shaped lending and stack section has the strongest claim to being the main room. It protrudes from the main building mass on the piazza side; here, too, is the main entrance which leads to a long entrance hall with access to the lending area, a newspaper room, a space for temporary exhibitions, and a section containing stuffed arctic birds. A staircase leads down to the geological museum, music library, and archives below. The raised facade of the lending room faces the central square; divided into five crystal-like, projecting sectors, it is clad with white, vertical ceramic tiles, and crowned with glazed ”lock skylights” which provide the lending room with shadowless lighting. The wall sectors open outward, fan-like, providing a striking frame for the stack circle and central lending desk. The plan structure is repeated in the ”book pits” sunk into the floor, containing those books which are not lent out, with stairs leading further down to the basement archives. Trapezoidal reading desks in the book pits and on the main level are for visitors' use. In addition to the large ”lock skylights” on the piazza side, several smaller ones are spread about the building, forming motifs developed from the exhibition pavilion in Venice and the Aalborg Museum. The first link in Aalto's plan for the town's new centre to be carried out, carefully studied in every detail, architecturally lavish, the Rovaniemi Library is a building of exceptional formal balance.
