Language variant : Town plan for Seinäjoki centre
Architect : Aalto, Alvar
Locality : Seinäjoki
Country : Finland
Building style : Modern architecture (not specified)
In the description attached to his competition entry (in the Aalto archives), Aalto wrote: "We find in the history of architecture precedents for a mere street crossing that forms the city centre. Some from the period of Greek colonization have been preserved to the present day (Palermo, Quattrofontane). The four streets converging in the central point of Seinäjoki widen there, generating a liberating rhythm without, however, disrupting the interplay of building volumes. The crossing, with its widened street openings, forms a star-shaped traffic plaza, to which the pedestrian plazas are connected at the ends."
