    Description :

"The abbey of Saint Germain des Prés exists from the middle of the VI century. King Childebert I had retrieved from his expedition in Spain against the Visigoths the tunic or stole of Saint Vincent and a magnificent cross enriched with precious stones, that is suppose to be the work of Salomon. In order to shelter these precious relics, Saint Germain, bishop of Paris, advised the king to build a church and an abbey. The church was dedicated, according to certain authors on the 23rd of December 558, on the same day of the death of Childebert, under the title of the Sainte-Croix-Saint-Vincent. Saint Germain being dead in 576, his body was buried in the oratory of Saint Symporien. Later on, miracles that operated on his tomb multiplied to such an extent that the church changed its first dedication for the one of Saint-Germain-Des-Prés…The Church, which has suffered a lot during its existence knew its worse devastation during the Revolution. The abbey was suppressed and the edifice was affected to the service of the parish; but shortly after, a decree ordered its closing and conversion into storage for saltpetre. The statues were destroyed and the graves of the Merovingian kings desecrated. Alexander Lemoir managed fortunately to collect for the Musée des Monuments Français the funerary marble statue of Childebert I (middle of the XII century) and the stone tumulus, covered with a marble mosaic of Frédégonde (XI century). Little by little the buildings of the abbey fell, either by fire or demolition…The prison of the abbey, rebuilt in the XVII century and framed by 4 turrets has been the theatre of one of the bloodiest scenes of the Revolution. There, in 1792, priests and noblemen confined in great number in the prison (around 300), were pulled from their dungeon and dragged in front of a derisory court, and were falling under the iron of the assassins that awaited them at the door. One knows which was the heroism of Miss of Sombreil, who rushed to this blood theatre, in the middle of the piled up corpses, to beg for the life of her father. The Church, returned to the worship under the Consulate, managed, later in 1817, to retrieve a number of monuments that had been placed by Lenoir in the Musée des Petits-Augustins, for example the shrine of Casimir, king of Poland, of the Douglas and the Castellans. Descartes’s tomb is also found in the church."
