After the war, Van Ravesteyn continued his work for the railways, of which the largest commission was for a new central station in Rotterdam. Its design has been dated as early as 1950, but the building was built 1956–57. Its best feature is the spacious main ticket hall with full-height front windows facing into the city. On the station platforms, the ends of the canopies and their repetition as owl-faced trainmen’s sheds are a good demonstration of Van Ravesteyn’s ability to combine playful imagery with strict adherence to structural and functional requirements.
