    Description :

The first competition concerning the Temppeliaukio church and the location of the church was held in 1932. The result did not satisfy the Competition Board, so a new competition was declared in 1936, and excavation work for the church started in 1939, according to Professor J. S. Sirén’s— who had won the third place in the competition—drawings. The implementation of the plan was however interrupted by the war.

The third competition was held in 1961, and the architects Timo Suomalainen and Tuomo Suomalainen won the competition with their proposal #Stone Church#. The basic idea of the plan was to preserve the nature of the square. Architect Pauli Ernesti Blomstedt (1900–1935)—who took part to the first competition and who’s proposal was then overlooked—also had the same idea of preserving the rock. Blomstedt also criticized the site development plan of being medieval and he criticized the idea that the church should be traditional. He emphasized at the same time the maintenance of the nature in this kind of squares, which are surrounded by densely built apartment block walls, like in Etu-Töölö.

The construction work of the present church started in February 1968 and the church was finally inaugurated in 1969.
