The French Film Archive was founded in 1938 and located in the Palais de Chaillot until September 2005. Archive creation was due to fear of destruction of French films by the Nazi regime. One of the founders of the archive was Turkish-born Henri Langlois, who was a pioneer of film restoration and recording. He started accumulating his collection with the help of private funds, until the French government began to finance the project. Today’s collections include about 40 000 movies and lots of other film-related material.
