    Description :

In the 1930s Van Ravesteyn made many attempts to blend functional and baroque. For example the Rotterdam Zoo (1937–1940) which main building is now greatly remodeled, was “dynamic and interesting, but the overpowering image in the original was great quantities of kitsch statuary and ornament”.

“A much more successful attempt at style synthesis came in 1938–1940, when Van Ravesteyn remodeled the theater ‘Kunstmin’ in Dordrecht, a solid, but unremarkable building from 1889. He reworked the interior, creating an elaborate auditorium in the cinema-palace style, and added a new wing with cafe and foyer.”

“This addition is preponderantly in the ‘Nieuwe Bouwen’ vocabulary of large sheets of glass in thin steel frames but with certain ornamental additions that connect it to the luxuriant baroque curves of the remodeled auditorium. The whole work is a surprisingly coherent combination of two disparate styles.”
