“With some persuasion from Madame de Pompadour, among others, King Louis XV founded an officers’ school here, to train sons of noble but needy families. Clearly preparing for bigger things, illustrious alumnus Napoleon graduated in 1785 as an artillery lieutenant.” People in the academy thought that ‘under the right circumstances he could go a long way’. And the rest—as we all know—is history.
