"In 1761, Louis XV commissioned Gabriel to create, to the northeast of the Grand Trianon, a pavilion in which he could live in the midst of the gardens he supervised with such loving care. After his death Louis XVI gave this architectural jewel to Marie-Antoinette in 1774, as she longed to live far from the burden of court etiquette…It soon became her favourite residence and was furnished in the 'modern style' she loved."
