    Description :

“The Camposanto (cemetery) is the fourth element in the Campo dei Miracoli’s lovely ensemble. Begun in 1278 by Giovanni di Simone, the vast marble arcades of this long, rectangular building are said to enclose soil from the Holy Land. Bombs in World War II all but destroyed its once famous frescoes, leaving only traces of The Triumph of Death (1360–80).”

“It was built so that the mortal remains of the Pisans could be buried in the precious earth from the Holy Land that archbishop Ubaldo de’ Lanfranchi had actually commissioned the Pisan fleet to transport from Golgotha.”
