    Description :

“Coming from Istanbul, we enter the town through a gap in the walls beside Istanbul Kapısı, best preserved of the Nicaean gates. There are three parts, two forming openings in the inner and outer walls, and the third a priumphal arch built between them in honour of a visit by the periphatetic Emperor Hadrian in AD 123. The outer gate is flanked by two great round towers, and there are carved reliefs – on one side horseman fighting, on the other two relief statues, now badly chipped. The triumphal arch shows how much the level of the ground had risen, for the statue niches are far too low. This arch also has round Byzantine towers on either side, made of brick. The innermost gate, built with huge blocks of stone, has not only slot on each side for a portcullis, but also sockets for a swing gate.
From Bursa, the road comes in through Yenişehir Kapısı, also a triple gate, but not so well preserved as the Istanbul Gate, largely because it was at this point that both the Selçuks and later the Ottomans broke into the city. A fragment of inscription affirms that the gate was built by the Emperor Claudius II in AD 268, but most of it is Byzantine.”
