    Description :

“The remains of a 4th or 5th C. martyrium, dedicated to SS Karpos and Papylos who were put to death in the persecutions of the Emperor Decius (249-51), stand beside Samatya Cad. about 500m back towards the centre of Istanbul. The tower of the modern Greek church of St Menas, high above the road, acts a landmark for immediately underneath it, opening off the street, is the martyrium, rather its crypt. It is easy to miss because it looks like what it is today – a workshop for making metal-doors and window-frames. However, if you venture into any unlikely-looking workshop muttering ‘Eski kilise’ (old church) in an interrogative tone of voice, you will be shown the right place with characteristic Turkish goodwill.”
