    Description :

“At the entrance of the Golden Horn, Top-Hané appears; with its landing-place, its cannon-foundery, and its mosque, with the aëriel dome and slender minarets, built by the Sultan Mahmoud. The Palace of the Russian embassy lifts its proudly-elevated front above the red-tiled roofs and the tufts of trees, and seems to command attention as the feature of the town; yet, as the residences of the other ambassadors are far less assuming, there would seem to be no necessity for this self-assertion on the part of Russia.”

Théophile Gautier, Constantinople of to-day, Translated from the French by Robert Howe Gould, London: David Bogue, 86, Fleet Street, 1854, p. 78.
