The first to have given a description of it is Jacob Spon, who was visiting Istanbul in 1675. According to him, the column is made of marble and granite and may be about fifteen feet high. Its capital is of the Corinthian order above, which used to be statue of the prince as is indicated by the inscription on the base of the column.
The inscription Spon is writing about says: ‘Regarde cette statue du prince Marcien, ainsi que le forum, oeuvre que le préfet Tatien a dédiée.’*
*Look at this statue of Prince Marcianus, and also at the forum, a work of art ordered by prefect Tatian.
