    Description :

“Adjectives like ‘organic’ or ‘sculptural’ are inadequate...‘A force of nature’ seems better, since the titanium-clad elements of this assemblage so strongly resemble unfurling tree leaves, budding branches, or spreading roots.” – James S. Russell.

Gehry’s working method is much closer to that of a sculptor than to that of an architect. The contours of a physical model were traced with a special wand so that the computer could digitize the design.

To the casual observer, the building appears to slouch aimlessly along the bank of the Nervion River, but the itinerary the visitor follows is in fact carefully considered. One enters from either the street, down a grand flight of stairs, or from a ramped riverside promenade. These routes meet in a lofty central atrium that can be compared to the hollowed-out interior of a tree trunk.

A stair twists crazily upward, clad in metal that it skinned with scales of glass. Curved wedges, finished in plaster or stone, appear to sway in the dappled light cast by skylights tilted at various angles. Gallery sites open out from this central space like tree branches. Every surface and space is seemingly pushed, pulled or twisted. Each move is echoed in the exterior, where the titanium shingles pick up the light as if this were a giant hammered-silver serving dish.
