The building story...is characterized by the conflicts between the Jesuits and the Cardinal. The Jesuits wanted to have a simple location for the service with flat roof for acoustics, and the Cardinal wanted to see a monumental church and insisted that it was vaulted. Il Gesù was the first major church building since the beginning of the century. When it was completed, the Church was the second largest in Rome after St. Peter’s. Since the Jesuits wanted to have a simple and ascetic interior, the décor was originally limited to the dome room and the side chapels, the latter being largely preserved in its original condition.
