"The town of Lourdes owes its fame to Bernadette Soubirous, to whom the Virgin Mary appeared on numerous occasions (18 in total) in 1858. When the ingenuous daughter of a poor miller confided her experience to her parents, crowds gathered at the grotto where the apparitions had taken place and a previously unknown spring began to flow. The bishop investigated the affair, and authorized devotion to Notre-Dame de Lourdes. Today it is the largest centre of pilgrimage in the world."

Example of a testimony:
On 1st September 1993, after “five-day pilgrimage to Lourdes that is worth six months of vacation,” as he likes to say, Jean Salaün returns home to La Loupe (40 km from Chartres) and is suddenly cured: "I felt an icy chill in the back, neck, limbs, with a strong odour and a sensation of heat...Then my hands regained mobility, I got up, walked...A few minutes later I was making sandwiches for breakfast."
