The New City Hall replaced 24 houses on the north side of the Marienplatz in various stages, and is grouped around six courts.
The first stage, Marienplatz/Dienerstrasse, was done in brick and sandstone neo-Gothic style; the second, reaching to Weinstrasse, is in limestone and tuff and recalls Flemisch city halls.
The 100 m long facade is richly ornamented with figures of all Guell and Wittelsbach rulers; the side facades with saints and figures from sagas and allegories.
The entire building was renovated in 1975, with special attention to the main court.
