"On the present location of the Lyon Opéra stood, in the past the Opéra Soufflot, built by Jacques-Germain Soufflot and inaugurated on the 17 of October 1756. Its director became Madame Michèle Poncet, called also La Destouches. The Soufflot Opera was closed and demolished in 1826. In 1827 King Charles X gave the authorization to build a new edifice, which architects became Chenavard and Pollet. The Theater of Chenavard was finished in 1831. 1986 became the year when Jean Nouvel won the competition organized in order to achieve the reconstruction of the Theater Chenavard. The renovations started in 1989 and ended in 1993 when the Opera Nouvel was inaugurated. The only parts of the old building that were left intact were the four facades and the Foyer of the public."
