The Baroque style was powerfully attractive to many architects of an anti-Catholic persuasion, for instance Georg Bähr, builder of the Frauenkirche in Dresden.
Dresden was a Protestant capital but its art and architecture were wholeheartedly Baroque. The Frauenkirche, begun in 1726, is Protestant only in its emphasis on preaching rather than the administration of the sacraments; indeed its interior, with its tiers of galleries, was more like a theatre than a church. Completely destroyed in 1945, it was reconstructed from 1997 onwards.
