    Description :

Near the former prison in Plötzensee, where people were tortured and murdered under Hitler’s dictatorship, a memorial was created, and a church dedicated to the victims. Thus there are also three tombs in the crypt: Erich Klausener, dean Bernhard Lichtenberg and a symbolic tomb for the martyrs who were denied burial.

The ceremonial courtyard and open-air altar are surrounded by high, gray-black “prison walls” in basalt slabs. The bell tower, set well away from the church, provides an entrance.

Works of art like Fritz Koenig’s portal sculpture “Apocalyptic Woman” and his Pieta, O.H. Hajek’s bronzes of the Stations of the Cross and Georg Meistermann’s altar wall fresco of the Vision of the Heavenly Jerusalem are all clearly associated with remembrance.
