    Description :

When you walk through the rocky and rootstalk hills towards the Cross Stone Church, the first thing you see in the middle of the pine trees is a bell tower with shingle roof. Behind it stand dark brown timber walls and behind them rises high a triangular-shaped wall, with a large wooden cross. When you enter to this open church in the middle of the nature, you may stop for a moment at the door. Initially, the church seems harsh. Your feet feel the ground. On the both sides of the aisle are bench rows made of round logs. Also the church walls are surrounded by bench rows. Inside the church are growing seven living trees in accordance to the holy number. The six old pine trees stand straight, and the rowan tree planted last summer is rooting well in these dignified surroundings.

When you finally gaze at the altar, you see a semi-circle made of cement, with a 5 meters high wooden cross as its altarpiece. At the foot of the cross a wild wine is exploring its power of growth on its first summer.

Eyes turn to the large stone of the altar table, the stone embossed with a large cross. Recent history reveals that camping boys found this stone in Partaharju in 1967. During the sermon held at the time in the camp church, the boys had been scraping off the moss from the stone while “passing time”, until suddenly they felt a strange bulge in the stone, which eventually was revealed to be a large, nature made cross on the surface of the stone. And so the church got its name from this Cross Stone.
