    Description :

“Richard Ford, in his delightfully humorous way, says of the retablo in San Martin Pinario at Compostela, “In it Santiago and St. Martin ride together in a fricassee of gilt gingerbread.” His attitude towards this work is the attitude of many towards Baroque in general, but the mere fact of his having “risen” proves vitality of that retablo! We do not wrangle about a work of art that has no genius. We accept it and promptly forget it. But no one could accept and forget Spanish Baroque. However biased we may be, we have to admit it forms a lively and a welcome interlude between the frigid austerity of Herrera and the sterile ‘Academismo’ of the Classic Revival.”
