    Description :

“The Basilica was designed by the Franciscan Friar, Filippo di Campanello (1255–1265). The church was actually an extension of the primitive chapel of St. George where Francis received his very first lessons and where he was later buried; his body was later reburied in the present Basilica of St. Francis. The body of Santa Chiara was also buried here…The body of the Saint was discovered in 1850, in the middle of the rock underneath the main altar, and was displayed (intact) in a glass case for the veneration of her followers. Also, inside the Basilica are to bodies of Saint Agnese and the Blessed Ortolana, who are respectively the sister and mother of Chiara.”
