    Description :

This former Benedictine monastery was built on an island on the site of an ancient warehouse, today visible in the archeological crypt.

Construction began ca. 1150 with the trefoil choir and continued with the raising of a monumental tower (finished ca. 1220) above the crossing, which received its present form in the late Middle Ages.

The interior of the choir shows elongated proportions reminiscent of the early French Gothic, while the later three-bay nave also presents ogival arches and a vault.

The monastery buildings were torn down after the secularization.

Extensively damaged during the war, the crossing tower, key element of the city’s panorama, was rebuilt first, and the interior only in the 80’s. Remains of Wilhelminian period murals and floor mosaics have been preserved, unlike in other rebuilt churches.
