    Description :

“The Marquis Boniface of Montferrat rode* to the Palace of Bukoleon which lay between the Hippodrome and the sea where ‘many ladies of highest rank had taken refuge’. Boniface was soon to marry one – the widowed Byzantine Empress Margaret. She was the King of Hungary’s sister and sheltering with her in the palace was Philip of France’s sister, the Empress Agnes, who according to one of the sources, was not at all pleased to see her compatriots rampaging through the city. Beyond the royal palaces the victorious troops were allowed a three-day spree of plunder and destruction; they murdered and raped and tore the city to pieces in a frenzied scramble for booty. When they burst into the great Basilica of St Sophia to snatch the altar vessels and fill them with looted wine, a prostitute was seen to ascend the Patriarch’s throne singing a drunken, bawdy soldier’s song.”
