    Description :

The parish church of the medieval new town stands like an island in its present architectural surroundings, stripped of the buildings that once huddled tightly around it. It is founded on an ice age sand out-wash, on which the television tower also stands; the buildings forming a rhombus around the latter relates to the longitudinal axis of the church.

The surrounding network of the streets at right angles still clearly reflects the system of the meticulously planned medieval town, with streets running consciously diagonal to the points of the compass and thus inevitably diverging from the east-west orientation of the churches.

St. Marien was probably started in 1270, then rebuilt after great fire of 1380 as a hall church with nave and two aisles and single-aisled choir. The vestibule was added in 1418, the high tower above it after Steffen Boxthude in 1466 and the neo-Gothic upper section by Carl Gotthard in 1789.

Notable among the lavish decorations and furnishings are the “Dance of Death”, a frieze dating from 1485, the marble pulpit, 1703 by Andreas Schlüter and the organ front after Johann Georg Glume, completed by Paul de Ritter in 1742.
