    Kuvaus :

“It is the oldest bridge of the entire city, and the only one left standing by the retreating Germans in 1944. The present structure dates from the 14th century, but the bridge had existed ever since Roman times. The disastrous floods of 1333 swept away the original bridge. It was replaced by a more solid structure, which also happened to accommodate a host of butchers’ shops, it being most convenient for their owners to toss their scraps over the side into the Arno. It occurred to Cosimo I that such a foul-smelling trade ill befitted this bridge, so he reserved if for goldsmiths and jewellers, who are still there today.”
