The tower is part of the Palace of Sotomayor. What is unusual of its architecture is that it has a square base that later turns into an octagon as it goes up. There are small cylindrical towers on each of its eight angles. The decorations of the tower include coats of arms. At present the Salamanca Provincial Government occupies the building.

La Torre del Clavero was the military element of the palace of Don Francisco de Sotomayor. It was built in the second half of the fifteenth century and features a stunning silhouette which looks like a fortress. It is a square of about 28 m high. Two-thirds of its height takes the form of octagonal prism and each of the sides features a semi-cylindrical drum which is adorned with a coat of arms. The interior has five floors connected by spiral staircases.
