“Staal had an ability to incorporate current architectural fashions in his buildings while still maintaining older ideas, producing a coherent synthesis.”
As in Staals extension to the Jewish Invalids’ Building on Weesperplein (1935), the shallow vault roof also appears in the Rotterdam Exchange; Staal won the 1928 competition for this project, but by the time it was built (1935–40) he had changed the design considerably.
“A few conservative elements had appeared, such as the bell tower, but the startling eclecticism of the whole composition, with its skewed monumental stairway and skinny, high-tech glazing, retains great vigor. The interior of the main hall, whose roof is spanned by folded concrete arches and lighted by hundreds of tiny circular skylights, was much published in its time—curiously, as an example of ‘functional’ architecture.”
