The National Library of France traces its origin to the royal library founded at the Louvre by Charles V in 1368. It expanded under Louis XIV and opened to the public in 1692. The library collection includes for example two Gutenberg Bibles and a load of manuscripts written by the French authors like Victor Hugo and Marcel Proust. This new library building holds in its four towers a total of 12 million volumes. Some academicians and the media have criticized the new library as a “Disneyland of reading”.
