“Amsterdam’s Central Station is a remarkable red brick testament to Neo-Renaissance design with a little Gothic thrown in for added drama.”

The terminal as built is the work of three designers: P.J.H. Cuypers, A.L. van Gendt and L.J. Eijmer. Railroad engineer Eijmer contributed the buildings most impressive feature, the great arched train shed. It was built at the same time as Dutert & Contamin’s Galerie des Machines in Paris, and though only half the span and a third the floor area, it gives it users some idea of the spatial effect of other great train sheds, such as in Hambug, Köln, or London (St. Pancras).

As at St. Pancras, the addition of a basically revivalist building to the front of this great space inevitably disappoints a present-day visitor. Modern remodeling has further contracted and obscured the original intentions, and only occasionally, as in the iron entrance canopy or the hinge footings of the arches descending through to concourse level, can one glimpse Cuypers illustrating the more advanced ideas from France.
