“On the other side of the Bedesten stands the handsome Rüstem Paşa Hanı built by Sinan for Süleyman the Magnificent’s scheming Grand Vezir and son-in-law a year or two before he died in 1561. According to the Imperial Ambassador, de Busbecq, who worked for years in Constantinople to arrange a peace treaty between the Emperor and Süleyman the Magnificent, ‘Roostem was always gloomy and brutal, and wished his words to be looked upon as orders…the Sultan strongly suspected him of taking bribes.’ He was certainly immensely rich, but he did spend some of his vast wealth on worthwhile building projects.
The han is built in alternate courses of brick and stone, with some cheerful little shops operating in the arches of the outer walls, and with small domes over the cells and porticoes that surround the two courtyards inside. “
