“On the other side of it [the Beyazit Mosque] is Beyazit Square, site of the ancient Forum of Theodosius, also called the Forum Tauri from the bronze statue of a bull at its centre. The forum was made for Theodosius the Great in 393, and was even bigger than that of Constantine. It too was surrounded by handsome porticoes and filled with statues and other monuments, not least a huge triumphal arch.
To make the people of Constantinople even more mindful of Theodosius’ triumphs, a great column was erected at the centre of the Forum in the year after he died, with reliefs depicting his various military victories carved in a spiral from bottom to top. It was plainly emulating Trajan’s Column in Rome. On top was a silver statue of Theodosius, but it fell in an earthquake in 480.”
