#We now make our way back to the first street in from the main highway and continue walking towards the Galata Bridge. This soon brings us to what at first appears to be a large Italian church with a huge campanile. This is Arap Camii, the Mosque of the Arabs, whose courtyard and main entrance are approached via an arched passageway beneath the campanile.
There are a number of apocryphal legends concerning the origin and history of this building, but evidence indicates that it was constructed by the Dominicans in 1323-37 and dedicated to St Dominic. The church seems to have included a chapel of St Paul, by whose name it was also called. It was converted into a mosque at the time of the conquest, and some four decades later it was given over to the colony of Moorish refugees who had settled in Galata, hence its Turkish name of Arap Camii.#
