“Passing between Bey Hamamı and Bey Hanı, we now can climb the steps of Bursa’s magnificent Friday mosque, Ulu Cami, the Great Mosque, built in 1396 to 1399 by Beyazit I. Early in life Beyazit was nicknamed Yıldırım, Lightning or Thunderbolt, from the rapidity with which he moved his armies to crush his enemies – until he was himself defeated and captured by the Mongol Timur the Lame. The son of Murat I and a Byzantine woman, he was the first Ottoman to murder a brother to ensure his own peaceful accession when his father died in 1389. Beyazit spent much of his short reign at war; and it was his victory on 24 September 1396 over a Crusader army at Nicopolis on the Danube that provided the wealth of booty which financed the building of this mosque, the biggest and grandest that had been built up to that time.”
