The theater was built in neo-baroque style designed by the Berlin architect Heinrich Seeling. It is named after the industrialist Friedrich Grillo, who made possible the establishment of the theater, and is now one of the oldest theaters in the Ruhr. The opening took place on 16 September 1892 with a production of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's Minna von Barnhelm.

The theater hosted opera, dance and drama, but for the rapidly growing city it soon became too small.

In the Second World War the building and its Wilhelmine facade were severely damaged. After rebuilding the theater in 1950 the new front facade is decorated in a neoclassical held.

After extensive alterations in 1980s by architect Werner Ruhnau, and a reduction from 670 to 400 places, a modern theater was created. The reopening took place in September 1990.
