In comparison with the other entries of a school or office character, Ervi's project was of a clearly original character. It was lightweight, spacious, of light colours and technically modern. It expressed a laconic freshness reflecting the optimism of post—war reconstruction and faith in the power of education. It was probably the last case in the history of building and construction by the University of Helsinki where the basic concept of the special character of university buildings was expressed down to the smallest detail…The choice of materials and details and their execution first appears to be limited and nondescript, but in fact these features are full of carefully worked and selected effects—the rotating doors of glass and bronze, the vestibule floor of Lapp marble, the hardwood veneer of the lifts, the original thick grey woollen curtains and upholstering of the settees, the perforated white acoustic boards of classic form, and the glass doors with their thin handles. A new material, plastic, was employed in the white lettering affixed to the doors and walls and in the brown seats and their backs in the auditoriums.
