De Klerk’s first block at Spaarndammer shows most of the elements that would become recurring motifs for the Amsterdam School architects. The building has five stories, but instead of having a half story or mansard roof, the top story has a full facade, faced in a flat tile that contrasts with the color and texture of the brick below. This lowers apparent visual height without sacrificing interior space: this tile story is interrupted with parabolic gables for rhythm and variation in the long facade, but these remain in the front wall plane. Main rooms are lighted with horizontal-format windows; ancillary rooms have small windows in odd shapes. Curved-pane windows are used as part of the brick cylinders that seem to bulge from the facade.

The second and third blocks around Spaarndammerplantsoen were for a housing foundation, “Eigen Haard”. The most notable difference is in the ornament, which is much more varied and wildly organic than on Block I. Perhaps De Klerk felt the need to break up the rather large facade. He did this with cylindrical forms of two sizes; the larger ones near the southeast corner have tile facings and are really sculptural manipulations of the total building mass. The windows are also an active part of the decorative scheme and are in a variety of shapes and sizes.

“Housing corporation ‘Eigen haard’ (Our Hearth) developed much of the workers' housing built in the Spaarndammerbuurt district west of central Amsterdam along the IJ River. This area developed during the period 1915–1920 and includes several buildings by Michael De Klerk including ‘Het Schip’ (The Ship) which is perhaps the most famous of the Amsterdam School buildings. Het Schip is literally the flag ship of Amsterdam School building establishing De Klerk as the best known of the Amsterdam School architects.”
