    …The practice to share the saint’s body to relics was established in the 300’s. An exception seems to be Rome, where it was traditionally considered forbidden to touch the body and, therefore, the attitude towards sharing the relics was negative. Roman law limited as well the transfer of the dead, and burial within the city walls was forbidden. Due to these facts in Rome, homage to the saints—martyrs in particular—was paid, during the first centuries, at their graves, the catacombs. By the time the barbarians began to threaten Rome, this practice had to change. In the beginning of the 600’s 28 loads of martyrs bones were transported from the catacombs to Pantheon, which was then consecrated as a Christian church.
