The juxtaposition of Philharmonie and Neue Nationalgallerie expresses both architectural views from the fifties and the sixties. In the first case 3-dimensionally moulded concrete is used as a working material with abundant imagination. In the second classical austerity is combined with a Constructivistic style with architectonic honesty.

Mies van der Rohe geared his design to the modern view of the museum as interior. The gallery is hidden under a broad terrace behind windowless walls. Above this roof slab, supports and glass hover transcendentally to form a space used only for temporary exhibitions.

Mies invoked—with complete justification—Schinkel, who also created a show facade of columns and roof beams in his Museum am Lustgarten, with little or no reference to the actual museum space.

The Nationalgalerie has been applauded as the great counterpart to the Barcelona-Pavillon (1929). “It cannot be overlooked however that this structural abstraction is on the border of what is architecturally sensible.”
