Potsdamer Platz, once the busiest spot in all of Berlin, was turned into a landscape of ruins during the war and later razed to become a “death strip” in conjunction with the building of the Wall. Following reunification of the city, it immediately became an object of greatest interest to developers and planners.

According to the decision of the Berlin Senate, the area between Potsdamer Platz, Staatsbibliothek and Landwehrkanal was to be developed. The program called for a huge complex consisting of two office towers, several commercial and residential buildings, department stores and a theatre.

Hilmer & Sattler established a framework for urban development with their prize-winning master plan, and Renzo Piano prevailed in the subsequent architectural competition and was commissioned to design the buildings.

It is not very often that a huge complex like this is erected in an area largely undefined in terms of urban development and infra-structural planning. The highly controversial debate reflects the crucial importance of the project.
