The midnight sun is the definitive highlight of the Arctic summer, but we do not need midnight sun and summer to value the specific greatness and beauty of the immense nature of the Arctic. Each season offers its own wrapping, but the content is still the same—indifferent to human intervention. To me the competition in Rovaniemi was a challenge which I couldn't resist. My knowledge of Arctic conditions and landscapes came front my works in Alaska and even before getting to know the program in detail, I had a vision about building the huge house, without demolishing the Arctic scenery…As to The Arctic Centre the idea was that there should be nothing but the street "made of the house", a main street decorated with all the many relevant items of the Arcticum. In my opinion you always have to consider the balance between the building and its purpose when, as an architect, you have the opportunity to build a place for exhibitions. You must not exaggerate when planning for surfaces and the rooms themselves. Coming to The Arctic Centre the promises you are given outside must be kept inside.
