Cuypers’ churches were mostly in the Gothic style, since that was the official choice of the Catholic hierarchy in the Netherlands.
Cuypers was interested in a true and honest brick construction, in which the facades would describe the floor plan to form a genuinely three-dimensional composition in masonry. As his work progressed, he devised some highly original floor plans, based on German Gothic examples.
One of the best was for the Vondelkerk in Amsterdam (1870–1880). Its plan is at the threshold of masonry structure as shell; it is almost as if Cuypers ended his researches at the point where Gaudi would begin.
